Traversée occidentale‪ or the Birth of a new Iranian elite
Western Crossing is a series of four volumes with historical analysis of a major component of the contemporary history of Iran. Birth, formation and evolution of a new Iranian elite in Iran during the period between the wars remains the center of this series. The choice of this subject, carried out by the Iranian historian Dr. Mahmoud Delfani, targeted a major problem in the history of Iran. The questions focus in part on the knowledge of the modern history of Iran and also the understanding of various socio-political, economic and even religious aspects, analyzing the evolution of the definition and change in modern Iran of the elite' status.

Volume I : Birth of a new Iranian elite in France (1811 - 1925)

The first volume of the series provides a comprehensive overview of the historical need for reforms by the new Iranian elite. This first volume reports the sending of young Iranian students in Europe in the early years of the nineteenth century; a turbulent period in the history of Iran. At this time the Qajar dynasty had neither the ability nor the power to oppose the demands of major powers such as the Russian Empire and the British Empire. According to the author, sending Iranian students in Europe by the government for the first time, illustrates the will to reform the country through an educated elite in the West.
Thus the process of sending the student becomes the starting point for the birth of a new Iranian elite . By analyzing this initiative, the author tries, thanks to unpublished documents from Iranian and European archives, to show the place of the West in the formation and evolution of the Iranian elite, at the time pf historical moments such as the Constitutional Revolution and the Great War. This volume deals with the process of
sending Iranian students in the West from Qajar reign until the arrival to power of Shah Reza Pahlavi in 1924.

Volume II : Iranian students in France under Reza Shah Pahlavi
(1924 - 1940)

The second volume of the series brings us to a historical period that marked the contemporary history of Iran and continues to have an impact on the political, social and economic life of the country. The author begins this volume by presenting the most significant events of the time, in a sociopolitical context disturbed with the fall of the Qajar dynasty and the rise to power of the Pahlavi dynasty. What is important in this volume is the comparative study of sending students under the two dynasties.
The author highlights the Reza Shah's policy to break the Qajar era by forming its own elite. To compare the two approaches, the author provides information on education in Iran, including Qajar's record in the formation of a new elite. The process of elite status' transformation, which occurred under the Pahlavi dynasty , has been addressed in this second volume.
The stay of Iranian students in France, the main host country for these scholarship students, the first competition for the selection of scholarship students as well as the reaction of the iranian population to the sending the students, have been the subject of extensive analysis encompassing many aspects of the lives of these students in Europe. As with the first volume, the author consulted hundreds of historical and unpublished documents from the Iranian and European archives .

Volume III : Education, political trends of Iranian students in France and their return to Iran (1921-1941)

Western Crossing series, analyzes the history of the birth and the formation of a new elite in Iran, and chose a different approach to study the Iranian elite. This methodological approach is based on the lives of Iranian students in Europe and especially in France. Indeed more than 70% of the students sent to Europe continued their studies in France. The author tries to examine the presuppositions and prejudices that remain around the question of the elite for a long time until now. For a better analysis of the subject, the author has studied in detail the studies, the social life and even the private life of these Iranian students during the period between the wars in France with hundreds of Persian and French documents. The objective of this approach is to know the level of contact of these young Iranians with the European society during the years 1920 and 1930.
Thus the analysis of this "level of contact" allows us to have a clear idea on the issue of transfer of modern Western ideas to an Iranian society via Iranian students trained in Europe. The author gives us the opportunity to see if these young students were able to establish a contact with the French society. In this third volume, a chapter is devoted to the political activities of a handful of young Iranians in France illustrating quite well the birth of a socialist tendency among some students and the close collaboration of the French and Iranian authorities to control the situation. This third volume finally provides a series of historical and socio-historical analysis on the birth of a new Iranian elite in the West.

Volume VI : Theory of the birth and the evolution of a new elite in modern Iran

The last volume is the heart of this research. Ie the first three volumes form a historical basis for the author to present in this fourth volume his theory about the birth and the evolution of a modern Iranian elite. Based on different assumptions discussed in the first three volumes, the fourth volume presents a theory on the evolution of a modern Iran elite status . Finally an analysis of historical sociology concepts of elite allow to take an analytical look at the socio-political developments in Iran of today.
This theory proposes a theoretical framework for the understanding of the elite status and the operation of the modern elite mechanism in the context of modernization and modernity in Iran. This theory, based on historical sociology, tries to illustrate the creation of a new elite in socio-political developments of the Iranian society. It also aims to describe the process of the historical transformation of social facts of the Iranian elite and its relationship with the political power and the society to better understand the causality of some major events in the contemporary history of Iran.
This is the first time that a historian presents a socio-historical theory of the modern elite in Iran, and it will continue with the debate on the subject among historians.
